The short answer: not anymore
The GRAIN ROT store page no longer lists a demo. There was one, it ran before release, and it is gone now that the full game is out.
If you are searching for it because a video or article mentioned "the demo", that content is from June 2026 — before the 7 August release.
The timeline
Everything here comes from the official Steam announcements:
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 10 June 2026 | "THE GRAIN ROT DEMO LAUNCHES THIS FRIDAY, JUNE 12!" |
| 11 June | "The Demo Drops TOMORROW — Friday June 12, 10 AM PST" |
| 12 June | "The wait is over. The GRAIN ROT Demo is out!" — plus a week of contests |
| 15 June | "60,000 Demo Downloads. The Outpost is PACKED!" — three days in |
| 20 June | 100,000 wishlists |
| 30 July | "Play the Full Game for FREE for 24 hours!" — a free-play window, not the demo |
| 7 August | Full release |
60,000 downloads in three days is why so much demo-era content exists, and why people are still looking for it two months later.
Why "the demo is not working"
This is a search people make, and the answer is usually not a technical fault:
- The demo has been delisted. If it is still in your Steam library from June, it may no longer launch or update
- Demo-era guides describe a different build. The game has changed a great deal — seven patches in the first five days after release alone
- Some community information is still demo-era. Our own elevator symbols page is built on a June thread, and says so at the top, because we could not find a 1.0-era confirmation of the full symbol set
If the demo genuinely still launches for you and behaves differently from what guides describe, that is expected — you are playing a June build.
What to do instead
- The 24-hour free weekend on 30 July was a one-off, not a recurring offer, and it has passed. No further free-play window has been announced
- The full game is $8.99 at the time of writing — see price
- Steam's own refund policy is the practical substitute for a demo, and it is Valve's policy rather than anything this game controls
Do demo saves carry over?
They may load, but the developers recommend against it. From the pinned Launch FAQ:
"The full release makes substantial changes to quests, balance, and progression, so we recommend beginning a new save for the intended launch experience. Older demo and playtest saves may still load, but they are not the recommended way to begin a full playthrough."
Plus a troubleshooting rule worth keeping: "If you encounter quest or progression problems on an older save, please first check whether the problem also occurs on a fresh save."
Was the demo content the same?
We do not know. No developer statement describes what the demo contained versus the release build — only that the release changed quests, balance and progression substantially.
What we can say is that the demo period ran roughly 12 June to some point before 7 August, and that the systems community guides describe from that era — elevator modifiers, the Outpost, the deep layers — still exist in the released game, with details changed by patches.
What is not confirmed
- The exact date the demo was delisted. No announcement covers it
- What the demo included compared with the full game
- Whether another free-play period is planned. The roadmap does not mention one
- Exactly which demo saves still load, and what breaks when they do
